Walker Zanger Stone Collection

The Walker Zanger Reference Stone Collection features approximately 5,000 natural stones, primarily marbles, granites, limestones, slates, sandstones, onyx, agglomerates, alabasters, basalts, bluestones, and soapstones. The Collection has acquired value as among the last commercial collections of natural stone in the United States. The referenced stones were used in both high-style and vernacular buildings and structures, serving as a living repository of 20th-century and 21st-century stone materials.

The stones are cut in standardized coupons with dimensions 12 by 12 by ½ inches. The entire collection is split in two mirrored partitions. One is currently managed by the Getty Conservation Institute, while the other by Penn’s Center for Architectural Conservation. A public, searchable database is set to be released in 2024.
